Upper motor neurons in the cerebral cortex initiate the motor commands, while lower motor neurons transmit those commands to the muscles, resulting in coordinated movements.
  • Reflexes: Motor neurons also participate in reflex actions, which are automatic responses to specific stimuli. In reflex arcs, sensory neurons detect a stimulus, and the information is rapidly processed by motor neurons, bypassing higher brain centers. This quick response helps protect the body from potential harm.
  • Muscle Tone Regulation: Motor neurons contribute to maintaining muscle tone, the slight tension present in muscles at rest. They continuously send low-level signals to the muscle fibers, keeping them in a state of readiness and preventing them from becoming flaccid.

Clinical Implications:

  • Motor Neuron Diseases: Disorders that affect motor neurons can lead to motor neuron diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). These conditions cause progressive degeneration of motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness, atrophy, and impaired motor function.
  • Motor Neuron Injury: Traumatic injuries or diseases affecting the spinal cord can damage motor neurons, resulting in paralysis or loss of motor function below the level of injury.
