What is Black-Speckled Palm Pitviper Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

• The black-speckled palm pitviper (Bothriechis nigroviridis) is a moderately venomous snake found in Central America, in the countries of Costa Rica and Panama. The snake belongs to the subspecies of pit vipers, family Viperidae. Pit vipers are termed so, due to the presence of certain heat-sensing organs located in a recess/notch between their eyes and nostrils. The black-speckled palm pitviper can grow from over 1.5 feet to slightly above 3 feet in length
• It preys on a variety of animals including small mammals and on frogs and birds (sometimes). It is a nocturnal hunting reptile that inhabits the cloud forest and high and lower montane forests, in elevations between 3,600 to 7,900 feet (1,100 to 2,400 m). The snake is well-adapted to climbing plants and trees; it is often found coiled on the branches, usually above waterbodies such as rivers and streams
• The snake has a slender body with a prehensile tail; young snakes present a black tail tip.
